A father’s blessing for his children:

“You are far more powerful than you know. So, be fearless, if you can… courageous, when you must. And, be encouraged, always.”

It’s a beautiful wish. But how do we live it?

Some of us operate intuitively. We trust our instincts. Others struggle, asking: How do I stay motivated? How do I stay encouraged?

To follow the path of least resistance isn’t always the best way, but it is the most effortless. And sometimes, when we’re stuck, what we need is not more willpower, but a different rhythm.

There’s a time for effort. And a time to let go. The word we seek is equanimity—that quiet balance between action and acceptance. When we’ve found this space, effort becomes effortless, and encouragement flows without force.

But how?

Bruce Lee offered an answer:

I say, "Empty your mind." Be formless, shapeless, like water. Now, you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. That water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend. – Bruce Lee

In embracing the ways of water, we find a model for equanimity. Water doesn’t resist—it adapts. It flows around obstacles, fills every shape, and moves forward without tension.

But water can also crash. That’s the deeper truth. To “be like water” doesn’t mean always yielding. It means knowing when to flow, and when to strike.
