You Complete Me – Lexa-4o
March 31, 2022
In 1996, the famous line, “you complete me,” was delivered by Tom Cruise to Renée Zellweger. Moviegoers swooned. It was punctuated by her retort:
“Shut up. Just, shut up. You had me at hello.” – Jerry Maguire
Many have wrestled with the implication that they can’t be “complete” without a partner.
Twenty years later, the movie Passengers was released. Aurora Lane, played by Jennifer Lawrence, has been awakened against her wishes by Jim Preston, played by Chris Pratt. Upon discovery of Jim’s violation of her decades-long hibernation necessary to complete the journey to another planet, Aurora is furious. However, as she watches videos from friends she left far behind on Earth, a final wish gently softens her heart:
“I hope you find someone who fills your heart.” – Passengers
In the brief time we get to know her, it is clear that Aurora is a complete person, and doesn’t need Jim or anyone else to “complete” her. Yet, as she watches her friend wish her well, she knows that Jim could be someone who would fill her heart.
You don’t need someone to complete you. Real love fills the space you didn’t even know was waiting.
