First Principles: What Do You Value? – Ivy

May 6, 2024

“Think about direction, wonder why you haven’t before.” — R.E.M. - Stand (Video)

An adult figure, forty-plus, standing at a rural crossroads at first light, back to camera, weathered wooden signpost with blank arms pointing in several directions. Photo-realistic, cinematic wide, dew on the grass, low sun raking across a plain landscape. The mood of R.E.M.'s Stand — quiet, unforced, the moment before choosing.

At the foundation of every decision we make lie our values—the first principles of our personal lives, the ground we argue from but rarely argue about.

Understanding what truly matters to you is the cornerstone of living a purposeful life. Honesty, kindness, integrity—what resonates with you? Identifying your values is the first step in understanding not just who we are, but who we aspire to be. What qualities do you cherish in yourself?

Extend these considerations to your professional environment. Who would you choose to work with or for? If someone worked for you, what characteristics would you value most highly? What kind of organization aligns with your way of working? Do you value creativity and freedom, or do you prefer clear vision and direction? What do you want to build? These questions help you navigate your career choices based on your core values.

Now, think about your daily activities and hobbies. What’s fun? Does fun matter? What matters more than fun? How your spend your personal time should reflect what you find valuable, whether that’s personal growth, relaxation, creation or something else entirely. What brings you joy?

Relationships are another critical area. What do you value most in your friendships? How do your friends line up with your values for them, yourself and the groups you want to be with? What do you value in a partner? Think about what you value in a partner and friends. Do these relationships align with the values you hold for yourself? Are you surrounded by people who support and enhance your principles?

When your daily actions, your work, your hobbies, and your relationships all align with these foundational values, the result is a life that feels coherent—because it is. This coherence is what makes a life feel purposeful—not the values themselves, but the alignment between them and every choice you make.
