Always Tell The Truth

January 3, 2021

A lone medieval English commander at dawn on a wet field, seen from behind or in three-quarter silhouette, addressing a small ragged line of men before a much larger enemy massed on the far ridge. Low grey mist, pale gold breaking through cloud, banners heavy with damp. Cinematic, photo-realistic, painterly restraint. No visible face reading younger than adult; if any face shows, weathered man in his 40s.

Although I have always held honesty among my most important values, as I explored motorcycling and the nature of leadership through my writing, I found that respect—even for an enemy—was an even higher value.

In both of my marriages, I learned that honesty alone isn’t always enough; sometimes, tact has value too. Learning when to temper honesty with kindness and compassion has been an ongoing journey.

As I watched the movie The King, I was particularly struck by one moment in the portrayal of the life of King Henry V. As the forces aligned on the field of battle, and the new king of England and his troops faced overwhelming forces and near-certain defeat, his adviser guided:

“These men deserve your confidence. And if you cannot give them that, at least give them a magnificent lie.”

There’s something beautiful about that moment; it captures the essence of leadership, and insight into the value of honesty. Always tell the truth, unless it’s the wrong thing to do.
