“The secret to letting go is forgetting to hold on” — The Secret of Letting Go

An open adult hand, palm up, releasing a single dandelion seed into a warm breeze at golden hour in a wide open meadow. Photo-realistic macro-adjacent framing, shallow focus, the seed catching light against a blurred field. No face. The gesture is forgetting rather than letting go. LAMB's Secret of Letting Go — ambient, weightless, tender.

At one time or another, each of us will be wounded by another. Even if they never apologize, you can still choose to forgive.

The age-old phrase, “forgive and forget” is misleading. You don’t have to forget to forgive. You just have to forget to hold on.

It may be helpful to understand that forgiveness isn’t primarily for the person you choose to forgive. Your choice to forgive is for you. It’s a word which describes the process of letting go.

When you choose to forgive, you are the primary beneficiary.

“One delightful discovery we will make is that our capacity for love is far beyond what we ever dreamed. The more we let go, the more loving we become. More and more of our life will be spent doing things that we love to do, with people for whom we feel increasing love.” – Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender, by David R. Hawkins M.D., Ph.D

Forgiveness is an invitation to an apology. Apology is an invitation to forgiveness. The order is unimportant. Ultimately, the apology—even if it is never offered—is unimportant. Forgiveness is everything.
