A Better Way?

“Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.”

But, is bad judgment inevitable? Must we always stumble before we learn to walk?

Perhaps not.

History offers a clear alternative. But those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. The corollary is equally true: Those who learn from history can avoid its mistakes. The lessons are all around us—if we choose to pay attention.

How about learning from others? Those who’ve gone before us—parents, teachers, mentors—often carry the hard-won wisdom of their mistakes.

My favorite reminder is simple: “You can learn the easy way, or the hard way.”

Choose wisely!

Again, we revisit the despair.com poster shared in chapter 1:

“MISTAKES"

"It Could Be That the Purpose of Your Life is Only to Serve as a Warning to Others.”

Harsh? Yes. But also true if you’re not careful.

Some people live as walking, talking cautionary tales. If you find yourself surrounded by them, consider carefully: Why are they in your life? What are you learning from them—or failing to learn?

Good judgment isn’t always born from bad judgment. It can also come from choosing good examples. Surround yourself with people who set a positive standard—those you respect and admire for the way they live.

Seek out those who embody wisdom and grace. Follow their lead.

And remember: You don’t have to make every mistake yourself.
