In the moments just before social media made opinions ubiquitous, I started a blog. Then, I wrote a review on Netflix.

In the stack of DVDs from Netflix (back in the good ol’ days of physical discs and no streaming), I had been avoiding the DVD for the movie Blood Diamond for weeks. I knew that the subject matter would be tough to watch. However, after viewing it, I was inspired to write my first and only review on Netflix:

“Blood Diamond is a disturbing portrayal of man’s inhumanity to man, balanced by the story of a father’s (Djimon Hounsou) love for his family, and the redemption of a gun smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio) who finds his true calling. Both stories are intertwined in the chaos of 1999 Sierra Leon in a way that is both terrifying and beautiful.”

It wouldn’t be until December 31, 2008, that I would publish my first “article” for Examiner.com as their new DC Motorcycle Travel Examiner. But, after a year of blogging in anonymity, in July 2007, I was beginning to find my voice.
